Abstract

This article reviews the literature and data regarding women participation in school and college basketball in the United States of America and Puerto Rico, since Title IX of Education Act of 1972 (20 U.S.C. §§1681-1688). It begins with a historic overview of basketball in these countries. Then, it discusses two main issues dealing with the implementation of said legislation in basketball, women participation, and the unequal treatment in the allocation of resources to teams and associated casuistry. It concludes that, despite the increment in the amount of women athletes and basketball players since Title IX‘s approval, the inequality continues in their participation and the conditions to play basketball in schools and colleges.
