Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes in the role of the school principal in Puerto Rico after the Department of Education had given more autonomy to the schools, implementing some of the principles of a site-based management. A sample of 905 of the 1,389 active school principals in the public schools in Puerto Rico answered a questionnaire. They offered their opinion in relation to issues such as school climate, administrative autonomy, instructional autonomy, their academic background as school principals, service training and the most important problems affecting their performance. The results of this study offer up dated information useful to cover the needs of the schools principals in Puerto Rico while they face the challenge of a new model of school administration.
