Abstract

The paper reviews the process of deindustrialization in Puerto Rico and the new forms of young men experiencing the masculine. In particular, it analyzes how the economic transformations initiated in the 1970s which, in effect, have influenced school, impact on the male experience of students. It is argued that men do not own masculinity exclusively. It sustains that the person has different experiences of gender, and thus must not be addressed in a fixed gender identity. In this sense the paper suggests that school, as an institution, must become aware and abandon its closed ties with economic policies.
