Abstract
This article analyses the current trends and characteristics, as well as the real and future perspectives of development of the internationalization process in Mexican universities. The internationalization strategies of educational institutions are examined under the perspective of the backwardness and challenges that the Mexican system of higher education still evidences at the beginning of the 21st century. Internationalization is presented as a way by which such challenges could be overcome in order for Mexico to successfully insert itself into globalizing tendencies, the knowledge society, and competitiveness.
