Abstract
Violence and aggression have been on the rise in public schools in Puerto Rico. This study identifies the roots of violence in school settings and evaluates the model of Nuestra Escuela (Our School), which has worked effectively with school dropouts in the prevention of violence at the personal, family and community levels. It analyzes the relationship between violent feelings and behaviors, with learning problems, academic failure and school dropout. How do Nuestra Escuela strategies for socio-emotional development; caring support and bonding by the teacher and school staff, the retreat workshops on emotions, and personalized education, all of which prevent school dropout, improve learning and academic achievement, also contribute to overcoming youth violence, and promoting harmonious relationships and peace in the schools, in the family and community settings.
