Abstract

A visit to the camps of students of the Río Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico during the recent strike serves as a starting point for the analysis of university conflict. Distinguishing between two visions of the university: one that meets a social purpose, forming apt citizens, and the mercantilist, privatizing and neoliberal, the author discusses the role of students, teachers and the administration during previous conflicts; explains the current students‘ claims and the Administration‘s positions; analyzes the strategies of both players; points to what characterized them, and concludes that students have reopened the window of hope for Puerto Rico.
