Abstract

The concept of "intelligence" has generated much debate and controversy. This article elaborates upon one of those problematic conceptualizations: the common belief in an entity that people "posses" or "lack" to varying degrees. The main objective is to generate critical reflections about the link this argument has with the scientific racism from which it originated. For this reason, it is important to understand its implications within the Puerto Rican social context. The psychometric model is addressed as a priority for understanding the problem. Based on historical reviews, I argue that the uncritical use of this assumption makes hierarchical educational practices possible. The inclusion of critical reviews and different voices is emphasized as important to the production of research directed towards equality. The contemporary implications for educational research in 21st century Puerto Rico constitutes a challenge for us all.
