Abstract

Since the last decade and particularly in the context of the current fiscal deficit, the pertinence of creating a culture of philanthropy in education has been emphasized at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). This article is a conceptual proposal to create a culture of philanthropy in education integrating philosophical, psychological, sociological and biological perspectives. The interrelation of philanthropy and altruism conducted the analysis in each perspective of the motivational factors in the act of donating or providing support. The authors recommend that these perspectives and the factors mentioned above should be considered in the creation of this culture and the elaboration of a congruent strategic plan that could be implemented in a higher education institution like the UPR.
