Abstract
This essay addresses the socio-cultural construction of the human body. The meaning of the modern human body is analyzed through its relation with an individualistic, private, and consumerist social structure. It recognizes the existing relationships between body-exploitation, body-project, bodymachine and body-commodity that are expressed through the physical activities people choose, as well as the formal educational practices. Instead, a body-self is proposed, which could be incorporated in schools as a coherent and full being by means of physical education.
