Abstract

The field of education demands professionals with adequate training to conduct educational research. Scholars agree that in the United States doctoral programs in education need revitalization through the incorporation of a solid research component. This paper describes different initiatives developed in order to foster the quality of educational researchers within doctoral programs. These are: the Spencer Foundation Research Training Grant, the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate, and the Council of Academic Deans for Research Education Institutions, among others. Findings from studies dealing with the quality and nature of the educational doctoral research conducted in Puerto Rico are described as well as our public policies regarding the research venture. Some elements of the UPR graduate program in education are analyzed, and recommendations to strengthen the program are presented.
