Abstract

This research was conducted to know what prevention, intervention and follow up strategies four intermediate public-school counselors use to deal with bullying situations. In addition, it identified the consulting strategies school counselors used to support teachers in dealing with this behavior. Four public school counselors from San Juan‘s Educational Region, belonging to the school districts of Carolina, Trujillo Alto, San Juan and Guaynabo*, were interviewed. Among the criteria used to select the participants were: tenure position with the DE and the professional counselor‘s license from the Puerto Rico‘s Department of Health. The study revealed that the complexity and particularities associated with bullying behaviors led counselors to use the following strategies: request support from mental health professionals, design workshops on the subject, and make referrals, among others. [* Note: When this research was conducted, the administrative structure of the Department of Education (DE) had seven educational regions and 28 school districs.]
