Abstract
The main objective of this exploratory study is to examine the most frequent needs presented by university students who receive individual counseling at the Counseling Department for Student Development of the University of Puerto Rico. The most frequently reported needs are related to personal and family issues, particularly romantic relationships and dealings with parents. These are followed by academic needs, information on career selection, and economic and housing needs. The results of this study can help in planning activities directed at prevention and early intervention in universities. In addition, they can aid in the development of management protocols that target the specific needs presented by this population, so students can achieve their maximum potential through academic, personal, social and cultural development in the university context.
