Abstract

University and college counseling centers are seeing an increase in the number of students with suicide ideation and behavior who seek counseling services. Suicide in college students is one of the most difficult phenomenon to understand since young adulthood is a developmental period usually characterized as full of hope and plans for the future.  This article will examine the literature on suicide ideation and behavior in college students during the last decade. National and local prevalence data and associated risk factors for suicide will be discussed.  In conclusion, a brief discussion on suicide risk management and treatment as well as recommendations for suicide prevention in college students will be presented.
