Abstract

The Spanish subjunctive and the Albanian optative express desire with similar semantic features; however, they are expressed with different syntactical structures. This study analyzes the optative and subjunctive moods in Albanian, and explores whether Spanish can express the same ideas without the optative, using only the subjunctive. While Albanian uses the optative mood with sentences that express wish, hope, or longing, Spanish uses conjunctions like que (that), así (in this way, as, because), lástima (it is a pity, unfortunately) and ojalá (I/ we wish) with subordinate clauses. Ojalá has a wider range of use in Spanish than in Albanian. On the other hand, Albanian offers some specific syntactical structures to express wish that never occur in Spanish. Both languages can also express wish with the subjunctive.
