Abstract
Discussion of the problem of the student retention at college level and presentation of specific competencies of the counselor that can represent important implications to elaborate new strategies. Presentation of Vincent Tinto Retention Theory and Albert Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory as theoretical frame for the study and measurement of the academic self-efficacy. The construct of the academic self-efficacy is suggested as strategy for the preventive counseling.
