Abstract

The number of students with disabilities in higher education has been increasing in recent years. This is the result of inclusive reforms, policies and laws that promote equal opportunities in work and academic settings. In addition, by the XIX century education was seen as a means for society development. This vision along with the evolution of the labor force has led to a greater demand for specialized jobs that require college education and in turn decreasing those opportunities of jobs for people without college degrees.  Consequently, college education has become a requirement to achieve competitive and higher pay jobs. Students with disabilities require the removal of barriers in areas identified as limited access to institutional resources, lack of knowledge and attitudes of professors, as well as the barriers that students with disabilities themselves imposed as a result of lack of support and knowledge. It is important the development and strengthening strategies and programs of direct service to students with disabilities, training and ongoing guidance of faculty members. These strategies depend on the best qualified personnel to meet the needs of the population of students with disabilities.
