Abstract
The purpose of this exploratory descriptive study was to explore the career counseling needs of freshman students of the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. Three hundred and forty-two first year students answered a questionnaire about career counseling needs, which was designed and validated by the researcher. The results suggests that 63% of them did not feel confident about their choosing an occupation or field of study. The career counseling need that was reported by the majority of the participants was the need to know relevant information about their chosen occupations such as the roles and functions expected and job opportunities in that field. Seventy three percent (73%) indicated they needed assistance in choosing the correct career, and 70% require help in selecting a career that is aligned with their personality. Others needs that they reported were: to receive career counseling services and receive assistance to manage their fear of failure, once they attempt study or work in the occupational field they‘reinterested in. Finally, recommendations related to career counseling are presented and discussed, as well as their educational implications.
