Abstract

The institutional repository of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPRM), known as Scholar@UPRM, began operations in 2017. Since its creation, the content of the platform has grown significantly. Currently, Scholar@UPRM is the main source for accessing the theses, dissertations, and project reports produced by graduate students in our campus. However, the repository has not been as successful in terms of collecting faculty research, as very few faculty members have deposited their academic works in the platform. This study examines UPRM faculty member perceptions regarding the repository and investigates what factors have prevented Scholar@UPRM from gaining better acceptance from campus professors as an adequate platform for the deposit and dissemination of their research works. It also addresses the benefits that the repository can bring to UPRM by giving broad visibility to the research conducted at the institution. A questionnaire was used to collect perspectives and opinions from UPRM faculty regarding several aspects related to the repository. The results indicate that in order to increase the deposit of works by faculty members, it is necessary to take measures such as promoting the institutional repository more effectively, offering orientations on the deposit process and on copyright issues, considering the implementation of a mediated deposit model, and communicating the benefits of depositing to faculty in terms that appeal to them.
