Detective Fiction and Representations of Motherhood in Dolores Redondo's Baztán Trilogy

Abstract

Promoting the end of a harmful male tradition, detective stories with female protagonists include in their plots numerous personal issues that directly affect the main character. Specifically, for this essay, I propose an analysis of the different representations of motherhood in Dolores Redondo's Baztán Trilogy, composed of The Invisible Guardian (2013), The Legacy of the Bondes (2013), and Offering to the Storm (2014). My intention is to illustrate how the different generations of women in the trilogy conceive motherhood under socially and culturally imposed premises, sharing the same feeling of "duty" that decisively influences their personal and professional growth. For a more complete analysis, I will also consider the adaptation made by Nostrodomo Pictures and Atresmedia Cine under the direction of Fernando González Molina.
