Abstract

This paper presents the first example of traditional romance "Casada de lejas tierras" collected in Hispanic America. It is a Cuban ballad in the oral tradition that I collected in the eastern part of the island in 2001. The discovery, made well into the XXI century, shows the Hispanic Ballad in Oral Tradition‘s validity. This Traditional Genre has stood the test of time, "its endless dying breath", and resists disappearing. Furthermore, it confirms the need to continue the search for traditional romances in Spanish-speaking America, a region which has been insufficiently researched in comparison with other areas of the pan-Hispanic Romancero. This paper also offers a short comparative analysis about the Cuban ballad and the other texts of "Casada de lejas tierras" collected in the different traditions of the pan-Hispanic Romancero.
