Abstract

Jorge Edwards (1931), one of the most prominent members of the Generación of 1950, and Pablo Simonetti (1961), who belongs to one of the latest literary generations in Chile, explore in their respective novels ;El origen del mundo ; (1996), and ;La razón de los amantes ; (2007), the subject of the love triangle in two periods of Chilean history. Edwards' novel is set in the Chilean exile in Paris, in the beginning of the 90's, as democracy starts to consolidate after the Pinochet dictatorship. Simonetti's novel takes place at the beginning of the year 2000, during the international stock exchange crisis and the process of democratic consolidation. Not only political conditions have changed in both periods, but the contents of both love triangles as well: Edwards' one is heterosexual; Simonetti's comprehends hetero-, bi- and homosexual relationships. The intertextuality of both novels explores values of Chilean society as well as levels of tolerance in the new democracy.
