Abstract

This paper addresses the theoretical foundations of attachment and the basic experiential and systemic principles of Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT). The role of emotion as an agent of change in the relationship is described and the main concepts, the three stages and the nine steps of the EFT are discussed. In addition, some experiential techniques and exercises are presented to familiarize the reader with the basic therapeutic processes of the model. A vignette is presented that illustrates the application of EFT techniques.  Finally, we will discuss some of the challenges therapists frequently face when working with couples to promote emotional attunement using EFT.
