Abstract

Mental health professionals should be aware of the outstanding elements that influence society and, as a result, their clients, so being attentive to culture and its development is essential. In this article, the relevance of manga and anime is discussed, as part of popular culture, in professional counseling and other mental health professions. The absence of adequate recognition by the professionals is discussed and how the populations that enjoy it are stigmatized as strange entities, emphasizing the geek subculture from the 80‘s. In addition, the usefulness of manga and anime as a tool for the profession is analyzed, examples of these media is presented for the reader's consideration, cases in which they have been useful for the mental health of individuals are exemplified and their use in therapy is discussed.
