Abstract
Analysis of St. Augustine‘s doctrine on knowing God according to the first four books of his treatise on the Trinity. God manifests himself in the so called Theophanies. There is special emphasis, thanks to the author‘s expertise , on the nuances of the saint‘s Latin vocabulary and its relations with terms in the Greek Bible. The authority of the doctrine of faith is taken for granted by Augustine; there is no attempt to "prove" it. The function of faith in his writing is to show the structure of the ideas about the trinitary relationships, which allow us an essential explanation of the divine being: by way of vision we have access to the knowledge of being. The key point in this essay is in illuminating the saint‘s keen ability to explain his concepts and their relevance, both philosophical and theological.
