Abstract

This article considers the impact of the gender social construction upon the self esteem and self affirmation of women. To define oneself as a person is a particularly complex process for women, due to the fact that we have been placed in a social space that has always been determined by the fears and desires of men. In all cultures, gender calls to what is natural, for it is a human and social construction that pretends to take possession of a strong objectivity, deeply internalized in individuais as well as groups. The work of self esteem and self realization requires both a personal and a social change, that may not only bring about well being, but that it may also provide a more solid base upon which we may affirm ourselves as women.
