Abstract

The past events of 2005 students' strike at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus centered the attention to old prejudices and exclusion attitudes which seems to hindered a coherent negotiation and inclusion for all community members. The events verbal and physical aggression showed how far we are from an academic style of sound judgment in the discourse, given way to aneloquent manifestation of exclusion. One of the main events was related to verbal aggression alluding to the sexual orientation of a university professor. Some students and students' organization acknowledged the event and its implications. Accepting homophobic hate instances and verbal aggressions about one's sexual orientation means to remember the history of oppression and exclusion of which sectors of society that shows or defend difference and diversity, have been victims. This research as part of a major study exploring exclusion and homophobia as elements of social difference in Puerto Rico, aims to examine the meanings of the past events at the University and describe students' and faculty's perception on homophobia as a manifestation of social exclusión and marginalization.
