Abstract

This essay describes how the constructivist methodology provides significantly to the profession of social work to achieve changes in Puerto Rico's current policy on public mass media, especially in the influence that media have on the violent behavior of the population through values socially negatives modeled. It explains that violence in the media is an issue internationally recognized as a matter of high importance, and the way that peoples developed social mechanisms for their regulation. It also explains the isolation that the social work as profession in Puerto Rico today with the positivistic and functionalist paradigm, and the search for other options to achieve more significant impact on a viable society. Finally, sees how constructivism builds bridges between these two realities and needs, and strengthening positive social change through social work, multidisciplinary action and work with communities.
