Abstract

Beyond revealing the mythical dimension of a famous Puerto Rican bolero singer, La importancia de llamarse Daniel Santos explores the feelings, experiences and dreams evoked by his songs and which are easily recognized in Latin America, a region where popular music has a strong collective dimension. But this text also fulfills other intentions. It can be read as a travel narration organized by a subject who strengthens the figure of the author and who is eager to assert his identity and that of the land through which he travels. His journey and route help us to analyze the ways in which he inquires about his own identity. Attention is given to the imagery used by the subject, his sense of belonging and the physical and symbolic spaces of cultural identity that articulate this text.
