Abstract

This article explores memory as a site of resistance in the short story books ;El rabo de lagartija de aquel famoso señor rector y otros cuentos de orilla ; and ;Sobre esta difícil tierra ; and the novel ;El sabor del tiempo ; of the Puerto Rican writer Felix Córdova Iturregui. The narrative analyzed here reveals that Córdova's characters rely on memory to deconstruct the discourses of power. This questioning stance allows these subalterns to discover the causes of the labor exploitation and the poverty they have suffered under capitalism and colonialism. We believe, furthermore, that Córdova suggests that this ideological awakening is the first step of a political struggle that will eventually engender social and economic justice in Puerto Rico.
