Abstract
The exposition by Lic. Ruth Santiago highlights the convergence of natural and social sciences, focusing on the urgency of transitioning to renewable energy to address the climate crisis. She proposes installing solar panels on the roofs of poor communities as an integral solution, emphasizing four reasons to prioritize this action: reducing pollution, improving health, mitigating climate change, and boosting the economy. She identifies economic and political barriers, emphasizing the need for political will to overcome them. The community movement emerges as a key force in this process, with examples like Casa Pueblo in Adjuntas demonstrating the feasibility of change from within communities. The “Queremos Sol” proposal aims to promote renewable energy in Puerto Rico, backed by over 100 organizations. Nationally, the discussion on electricity is growing, with significant support for the Green New Deal. Community participation and expert commitment are crucial for advancing towards a sustainable energy future.
