Abstract
Everyone remembers that the Discourse on Method begins by affirming that reason "is by nature equal in all men". But the specific way in which Descartes makes this statement is not without its peculiarities, which has caused curiosity and perplexity among scholars of Cartesian work. There are, in particular, two aspects of this initial approach that call for attention and commentary.
