Abstract
In Puerto Rico, programming competitions have been held since 2000. The University of Puerto Rico-Ponce started interuniversity programming competitions in academic year 2010-2011. Since then, they have been offered once during each year. Also, universities in Puerto Rico have been represented in international programming competitions sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery. However, benefits and challenges faced by Puerto Rican students in programming contests have not been studied. The research has three main objectives: (a) to identify benefits that students perceive in their participation on programming contest, (b) to identify the greatest difficulties faced by them, and (c) to offer recommendations for future activities. According to the results, the main objective of the student's participation is not to win. Participants demonstrate their programming skills, while developing and strengthening other skills. Respondents recommended that students participate in the competitions and that faculty should also attend in support of their students.
