Abstract

This article aims to raise awareness of social work professionals on the importance of spirituality in professional practice and offer some strategies for assessment. These strategies must have a cross-cultural perspective in response to ethical mandate culturally competent practice in relation to spiritual diversity. The article content is structured in three parts: (a) the definition of spirituality, (b) the influence of spiritual beliefs and practices in the lives of people; and (c) the participant's spiritual assessment. Social workers need to be sensitive and culturally competent as a requirement for the provisión of fair services, free from prejudice and criticism. It is necessary that these be able to face the description of spiritual and religious beliefs, practices and problems of the participants in this regard, with the same understanding and professional competence that they possess in other áreas of professional practice, even when the vision of its participants differ significantly from their own.
