Abstract

Puerto Rico has more than ninety public and private academic libraries. Each of these libraries has the personnel, collections, equipment and infrastructure necessary to satisfy the information needs of its users, as well as to support the curriculum and research of its universities and colleges. The libraries periodically collect information about its tasks in their annual reports and self-assessments, but the quantitative and qualitative information gathered remains within each library. In times where people are so eager to share information, it is necessary to develop a tool which will allow the in depth knowledge of the academic libraries traits, both for diagnostic as well as for comparative purposes. The database entitled Perfil de las bibliotecas universitarias puertorriqueñas, constitutes an effort heading in that direction.
