Abstract
This essay addresses the socio-economic conditions which induce youth from marginalized areas to delinquency and violence. It presents the mistaken and unsuccessful strategies employed by the State to deal with the problem, such as long periods of confinement without offering effective and useful tools for rehabilitation. In addition to this, a strong stigma prevails over former prisoners when they seek employment. These difficult circumstances often lead to recidivism. In light of these challenging settings, the essay presents the results of various higher education prison programs. Finally, it recommends a comprehensive system designed to achieve the integral development of the human being while in confinement.
