Abstract
The article The Biological Sciences course from the College of General Studies: Notes on the first five years of the 1950's and guidelines towards the future is an essay based on research on the origins of the Department of Biological Sciences (DCIBI) of the College of General Studies of the University of Puerto Rico at the Río Piedras campus. It addresses the philosophy, curriculum and teaching-learning processes that distinguish it. The essay is documented with a wide and diverse collection of primary and secondary references. We intend to carry out institutional research, in addition to providing the sociological critique that allows integrating the context in which the origin and development of the DCIBI takes place in confrontation with important problematic axes through which the 'General Education Movement' and the Faculty of General Studies itself go through.
