Abstract
The following publication is based on a doctoral dissertation for the Eugenio María de
Hostos Faculty of Education (UPRRP), and its graduate program in Curriculum and Teaching. A
qualitative case study was projected to deepen and understand the formative experiences that
are developed in a school specialized in the teaching of theater art, that belongs to Puerto Rico´s
public education. According to the articles 26 and 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, it is feasible to define some characteristics of this educational project. First, because its
offering of technical-professional training, and the purpose of the full development of the
personality of children and young people. Correspondingly, the fact that the curriculum is
structured according to the talents, vocation, and interests of the students, offers benefits in
individual terms; but also encompasses broader pedagogical and sociocultural implications.
Those aspects contribute to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental
freedoms; and they also promote to the understanding, tolerance, and harmony between people. Lastly, the current existence of the school is described in the context of COVID 19, and how it is
projected into the future. Specialized schools in Puerto Rico insert the island into fundamental
pedagogical debates at a global level, such as the Schools Choice, the implementation of artistic
teaching, and its positioning within public policies on education.
