Abstract
Citizen participation describes the type and level of democracy of people experiences;
or the type of participation that citizens exercise, tell us the democracy they live in. There are
many or different approaches to the concept of participation. This article gives a brief presentation
of the models and principles that are worked on Participatory Democracy, while reflecting on the
scope and possibilities of its practice in Puerto Rico. It also summarizes the work carried out from
the community organizations and, in particular, the proposal for Direct Democracy of Fundación
Agenda Ciudadana. The focus is on raising democracy as an act and practice, than as a
discourse.
