Abstract
With its conquest of Puerto Rico in 1898, the United States began an extraordinary effort to establish a public education system throughout the island capable of assisting in the implementation of the colonial rule. This included building schools and the development of programs for the training of teachers and school personnel. The primary objective was to create the ideological and material conditions for the imperial enterprise. To this end the United States organized a teacher education program during the summer of 1904 that sent 540 educators to Harvard and Cornell Universities.Downloads
