Abstract

There is a fairly widespread preconception that countries with a small and restricted land area are inherently limited in achieving appreciable levels of development. This idea is basically correct if viewed in static terms since, indeed, within the borders of small countries the market size is quite restricted and the availability of natural resources is comparatively small, thus narrowing the possibilities for establishing a diversified and dynamic economy.
