Abstract

The urban resident over time has expressed a disturbing ambivalence about what has been his most precious and significant creation in history: the city.He insisted that this was the source of civilization and had shaped his language to reflect such a position. He has lamented that the city causes corruption and has thundered against its evil influence. He has marveled at the beauty of his tall structures but has been repulsed by his shacks. He has resented his changes and looked for ways to perfect it.This has produced more critical than advocates in recent years, some of whom have even questioned the city's right to persist, or have proposed major changes as conditions for survival in the city. But this, defying predictions and adverse judgments, has continued to grow, bringing with it changes in its structure and its essence. This has led some observers to suggest that the issue is no longer; Should the city exist? But will the city persist?
