Abstract

Through an analysis of the debates and writings on music of the Hispanic Caribbean and Brazil, this essay aims to explore the tensions and contradictions within hegemonic discourses on national culture. Because it was perceived as having great capacity to synthesize traditions of various origins, music attracted intellectuals as an expression that could effectively come to represent an unintelligible national identity.
