Abstract

Diplomatic relations between Spain and Cuba were put to the test in 1912 because of the expulsion from the island of ten Spanish workers. Although it was thought that the gashes opened in colonial times between the Spanish and Cubans had healed over, it is indeed true that during the second decade of the Republic there were still conflicts bringing the two communities into confrontation. The Plenipotentiary Minister of Spain, Cristóbal Fernández Vallín, was bold enough to make statements stressing what he considered were "shortcomings" of the Cuban government in solving these problems, which led to him being relieved of his duties and the departure of the Spanish consul from the island.
