Abstract
Arcadio Díaz Quiñones’s essay “De cómo y cuando bregar” (2000) explains a complex task -sui generis becoming- of Puerto Ricans at the time of their history. La brega is analyzed as a notion that refers to the contrasts and contradictions of the world of human life and of Puerto Ricans in their perseverance. Existentialism as a philosophy has investigated these <<ways of being>> where Being is actualized and where la brega described by Quiñones finds an analogy. It is discussed whether la brega (the struggle) as a notion includes this evolution and dialogues with the tension introduced by Kierkegaard to Western philosophy: the kingdom of anguish in front of the world of possibility.
