Abstract
The sustainable development concept is analyzed to find congruencies with environmental ethics’ philosophical discourse of 1970’s. Proponents of the sustainable model coincide with ecological ethics’ arguments on the notion that human excessive intervention on the ecosystems is responsible for the ecological crisis. Both positions agree that humans have a moral obligation to solve the ecological crisis and satisfy vital human needs without undermining the health of the natural system. The author examines two visions of the nature-human relationship proposed by the ecological ethics to establish coincidences with the sustainability vision. In conclusion, to achieve global sustainability it is indispensable that human beings develop an individual and collective ecological consciousness.
