Abstract

The aim of this article is to present the results of the value that the student-athletes at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus place on the academic formation that the institution offers. This information was obtained through an assessment of needs, experiences and characteristics completed by a sample (n=223) of students-athletes at the UPR-RP. The analysis of the intervening factors in the development of their double role, in addition to the other situations that this population faces will be the main focus of this study. The results must serve as a reference point for the implementation of actions to promote the harmonization between both roles (student and athlete), so that they do not have to give up on one of them in order to face the emerging changes in the University of Puerto Rico (UPR). It is concluded that the student-athletes of the UPR-RP mainly value the academic quality of this institution and take advantage of their sports skills to achieve their academic and professional goals. At the same time, matters of economic nature, infrastructure, or other services to this population are complements that motivate their sports participation. However, all of these remain supplementary, while the central factor is being able to receive a high-quality college education facilitated through their sports abilities. Finally, it is concluded that, to be able to harmonize sports practice with their education, our student-athletes need institutional support that helps them achieve their academic-professional goals.
