Abstract

The course Quantitative Methods 3031 (MECU, by its acronym in Spanish) or pre-calculus is the first in a vertical sequence of courses required for all students in the Bac helor‘s of Business Administration program at the Río Piedras campus of the University of Puerto Rico. In the past five years, the percent of students who fail in this course per semester has fluctuated between and 36% and 60%. As a result of the curricular review of the Bachelor‘s degree in Business Administration, the Faculty Curriculum Committee requested the inclusion of other subjects that are not normally part of the course. In order to determine the effect of the change in agenda and methodology of the teaching of MECU 3031 during the first half of 1999-2000, this research project was developed. Two sections of MECU 3031 were selected, in which the preliminary agenda adopted by the professors of quantitative methods were used. In comparison with the previous agenda, this agenda adds linear programming, the "Simples" method, and the traditional conference method calculator and a discussion of the exercises. At the end of the semester, we compared the two sections for the percent of failure as a measure of academic achievement. In the section that used cooperative learning, 19% failed (D, F, W, X); in the other section, 61% failed.
