Abstract
Venezuela, like other countries, has recognized the role of small and medium-sized manufacturing industries in supporting economic growth; however, contrary to the global trend, erratic public policies, absence of a conception of development with long-term vision, and an openness to trade without a process mediated by economic strategies caused small and medium-sized manufacturing industries to lose traction in Venezuela; in decades prior, they accounted for 97.4% of industrial establishments and accounted for 64.7% of workers. This exploratory paper descriptively examines the small and medium-sized manufacturing industries to evaluate their performance during 1989-1996, a period of important changes in Venezuelan society.
