Abstract

The process of world trade liberalization, the fruit of both political and economic changes, has encouraged trade between countries. International trade is used as a source of economic growth for developing countries. To promote commercial trade, new trade and economic integration agreements are established or improved; however, the impact of these agreements has distinct repercussions in different parts of the world. In light of the free trade agreement, for example, aspects which may be beneficial for Mexico are not necessarily positive for the small economies of the Caribbean that depend on the U.S. market for their exports. The consideration of the particularities of each country—and of their relationship with their environment—will help to broaden the possibility that all countries can benefit from free trade, if it is in the interest of promoting the economic and social well-being of all.
