Abstract

The Jewish, Christian and Islamic religious tradition bequeathed us a completely anthropocentric and teleological vision of the world. In the Middle Ages, the Universe was conceived as a great theater, in the center of which, like a stage, was the Earth. There, human beings acted under the watchful eye of God, the angels and the rest of the heavenly court, who from behind the sphere of fixed stars watched the show and cared for us. We might be sinners, but there is no doubt that we were the protagonists of the cosmic drama. This whole worldview collapsed as a result of the scientific revolution.
